Atypical Colony Morphology of Staphylococcus lugdunensis Isolated from a Wound Specimen.
The incidence of infections due to coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) has been steadily increasing in recent years. In this report, we describe an isolate of the CoNS Staphylococcus lugdunensis from a wound specimen with a colony morphology distinct from that of a classical S. lugdunensis colony. Specifically, wrinkled, medium-sized, beta hemolytic, opaque, rough white colonies were detect...
متن کاملColony variation in Staphylococcus lugdunensis.
Staphylococcus lugdunensis is being increasingly reported as a pathogen with an outcome resembling that of S. aureus rather than coagulase-negative staphylococci. Recent local isolates exhibited colonial variation that delayed identification and interpretation of clinical significance. Until now previous descriptions have not emphasized colonial variation as an important identifying characteris...
متن کاملNovel selective medium for isolation of Staphylococcus lugdunensis from wound specimens.
We compared a novel selective Staphylococcus lugdunensis (SSL) medium with routine media (blood and chocolate agars) for the detection of S. lugdunensis in 990 clinical specimens (from tissue, pus, or wound swabs). Significantly more S. lugdunensis isolates were detected on SSL medium (34/990) than on routine medium (7/990) (P = 0.001, McNemar's test).
متن کاملSevere Staphylococcus lugdunensis keratitis
We report a severe case of Staphylococcus lugdunensis (S. lugdunensis) keratitis presenting as suppurative keratitis in a 77-year-old woman. The patient's chief complaint was eye pain and decreased visual acuity in her right eye. Suppurative keratitis with a severe corneal abscess was diagnosed by a slit-lamp ophthalmic examination. The causative organism was identified as S. lugdunensis by bac...
متن کاملStaphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis.
Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a recently described coagulase-negative species which has been associated with human infections, including infective endocarditis. A case of native valve endocarditis caused by this organism is described. The initial laboratory detection of S. lugdunensis is facilitated by a positive test for ornithine decarboxylase. The identification of such isolates should not c...
